NBC gets the boot from Apple
While ABC, CBS and FOX say yes to renewing their contracts with Apple for the upcoming season, it's a NO for NBC Universal! Apparently, when in negotiations for pricing episodes, NBC wanted to charge iTunes customers a whopping $4.99 per episode compared to what they currently are available for, $1.99. Apple refused to sell NBC's episodes at this price and were disappointed to hear that NBC would want such an increase in price due to the fact that ABC, CBS and FOX agreed to maintain their prices at $1.99. iTunes VP, Eddy Cue stated, "We hope they will change their minds and offer their TV shows to the tens of millions of iTunes customers."
According to Apple's numbers, NBC controlled 3 of the top 10 slots for iTunes best selling shows, accounting for 30% of all TV show sales. A loss for NBC Universal or Apple? That is for you to decide! NBC's contact is up in December, so that gives fans a chance to purchase half a season of their favorite episodes, right? I don't think so! Apple ruled NBC's contract will end before the new seasons start in September.
